Should Anonymous

I am not a pie chart apparently hit a nerve.  As I am not alone in casting aside the divided self, I am launching my own movement. I’m calling it SHOULD ANONYMOUS. For those who feel they always should be somewhere else, doing something else, the time has come to own your problem. So say it with me.

I’m starting with seven steps. It’s a lucky number. Master one at a time. You can do it.

1. Eat the pie, don’t be the pie. It can be a fruit pie, a pot pie, a pizza pie. The program is pretty forgiving.

2. Busk and bask in the task of tasting (thank you De Jackson) Busking is street performing. Sharing your joy with others. Go out there and do what you do, and savor every second.

3. Sing yourself whole, in harmony (thank you Sarah W. Bartlett). My addendum. Sing loud so I can hear you.

4. Accept that people will inevitably want you to be doing something else. They’ll get over it.

5. “No, thanks” is a sufficient answer.

6. The only should that matters is your own. Choose wisely. Replace “should” with “will” or “won’t” and pick one.

7. If you give up should for yourself, you can’t turn the weapon on someone else. My grammar teacher gave us an instant F for using the word should. Same applies here.

So if you start thinking “I should ….” just remember, people should have enough to eat, we should be able to solve disagreements though collaboration and compromise and the best tasting foods should be calorie free. With so many big shoulds to tackle, we can’t afford to spend so much energy on the insignificant ones.

Feel free to add to the list. You all rock.

  1. Love #4 and #5. Sweet Pea gave me a little pouty face when she got home from school yesterday and learned that I was on my way out to find a place to write for a couple of hours. Two margaritas and several hundred words later, I no longer cared. 🙂

  2. No better way for our children to learn how to set limits than to see how it’s done. Purposefully, with love, and with a couple of margaritas. Next time, take me with you.

#8: There is really nothing you must be. There is nothing you must do…However, it helps to understand that fire burns, and the earth gets wet when it rains.

We SHOULD definitely have coffee. 😉

  4. […] I wrote a few weeks ago about banning “should,” and one of my rules was that we do not “should” unto others. Resentment, however, is an implied should. I’m angry because people should behave differently than they do. Just because I don’t say it, doesn’t mean I don’t hold on to it as my personal truth. […]
